As you address holiday cards to clients, prospects, colleagues and professional acquaintances, consider that despite all the press to the contrary, just maybe direct mail does indeed still work. Admit it. You look forward to this time of year to exchange calls and emails that reconnect you with those you haven't seen in a while. Have you ever noticed that generally this happens AFTER the cards are sent?

I don't know about you, but every time November 1st rolls around, I cannot stop thinking about Thanksgiving until the holiday arrives. That is 26 days of turkey on the brain! I look forward to that overly full feeling from too much Thanksgiving goodness. What a glorious holiday revolving around family and food!

There is a well-known anecdote about Kellogg's and Post. During the Great Depression, cereal was still a new commodity and many didn't accept it as an alternative to other breakfast foods. Post cut its advertising budget and other expenses. Kellogg's doubled its advertising budget and expanded its promotional efforts. Kellogg's profits increased 30% and 80 years later, no other company has been able to unseat the King of Corn from its leadership position.
